Find information about our curriculum below.
Our curriculum is topic and skills based. This means that we link the subjects together including Literacy. There will be an outcome from the topic and an outcome for Literacy. An example might be that if the children are studying an ancient civilization such as the Aztecs, the final outcome may be a museum with Aztec artefacts. The linked Literacy outcome could then be a guide book to the museum.
Skills are based on the specific topic. For example if children are studying a history based topic they will be taught facts and historical information but the main focus will be on inferring and deducing information on evidence. These are the skills of being an historian rather than just regurgitating dates and names.
Topics last for half a term and run on a two yearly cycle. Some subjects such as maths are still taught discretely but where natural links exist they are exploited. For example if the children are studying for a Design Technology topic which involves weighing and measuring that will be taught in maths during that half term to reinforce the learning. For each half term the links between that term's topic and each subject are summarised in the Topic Web for each year group. These can be found on the 'Our Learning' page under the appropriate year group.
We are also introducing a Core Skills curriculum which teaches the children skills for learning. These include thinking skills, communication skills, research skills etc. These are then reinforced during lessons.
This curriculum has been planned and mapped to ensure that there is a line of progression for all pupils to follow from the time they enter the school at age 4 until they leave at the age of 11.
